Meet the Artist

Watercolor Instructor Debbie Friis-Pettitt

When I began exploring the world of watercolor, I was baffled by the abundance of conflicting advice and guidelines. Consequently, I attended countless workshops and invested in a plethora of books - but each had its own rules and seemingly essential colors which I then had to add to my palette. As my collection of colors soon exceeded 30, it only added to the confusion. So, after a few years, I found myself yearning for a simpler approach; one that didn't involve deliberating over the appropriate color! With the aid of just 3 transparent, staining, and permanent colors, as well as my recipe cards which outlined specific color combinations, I learned how to reduce confusion and incorporate harmony into my paintings. Gradually, my watercolor paintings took on new life with impressive value ranges and vibrant colors - culminating in awards at various art shows and competitions! And now my joy lies in imparting these skills to beginners as well as experienced painters.

FAQ

Getting started!

  • Q: I can't draw!

A: You don't need drawing skills to learn how to paint with watercolor! I go over the transfer methods with each tutorial.

  • Q: Do you have any FREE tutorials?

A: YES! All my "HOW-TO" tutorials on techniques, supplies, and color are all FREE! It is a good idea to watch those first before starting any painting tutorial.

  • Q: What colors and supplies and equipment do I need?

A: Under each tutorial are a number of resources. Charts, supply lists and class images, and drawings. The free tutorial on "Getting Started" had a lot of information on tables, lights, etc...

  • Q: Do you supply me with a drawing, and the image?

A: Yes, there is a chapter at the very beginning for all the downloads you will need; plus a few extras!

  • Q: What if I have questions as I am painting?

A: You have a few options.... You can email me with your question, and some questions can be answered by checking out the discussion board in the upper right corner (and reading other questions and answers). Another great option is to join my private Facebook group for students!

  • Q: What if I can't keep up? Can I watch offline?

A: All the tutorials from beginner to advanced are "go at your own pace". You can rewatch any tutorial as many times as you like. Unfortunately, you can not download a lesson to watch offline. I can also provide you with a DVD if you need one! This is a good option if you have limited internet service. Each lesson is $5.00 to cover shipping.

  • Q: I am having trouble viewing the video

A: Your browser is the most common problem with viewing the videos. Check your browser settings. If you are viewing the tutorials from a work computer or device you may have a firewall issue (This happens often!).

  • Q: Do you give individual instruction?

A: Yes! send me an email and we can go over available options.

  • Q: Do you conduct workshops?

A: Absolutely! I have workshops in my hometown of Prescott, AZ, and I can set up a workshop with art groups and organizations! email me for more information.
